Lectionary Leanings

After preaching last week on who is missing… I feel obligated to listen for God’s word on how we reach those that we have named.

This week’s lectionary readings, have me thinking about going to where people are – instead of waiting for them to come to you.

Romans has this great two step plan for salvation: believe and you will be justified, speak and you will be saved. Well, speak not just anything… but speak the truth about God. That Christ is Lord.

One of the scariest questions (in my opinion) that had to be answered on our examination questions for ordination is “How do you interpret the statement ‘Jesus Christ is Lord’?” I have often hesitated to use that statement because of the way I have heard others use it. I hear it used in militaristic and political ways that seem to have no connection with the Jesus who speaks out of the scriptures. I hear it used solely as a means of gaining salvation, as the defining measure – rather than as a beginning point for a whole life lived in faithful action. I hear it in ways that separate and promote Christ from the Trinity.

What I realized is that the question is really about HOW Jesus is Lord and finally was able to write that we can only call Jesus, “Lord” in the context of the Kingdom he proclaimed. A Kingdom that is for the poor and oppressed, a Lord that walks along side the people and offers them life, rather than ruling from above. When we claim that Jesus is Lord, we are proclaiming a kingdom that is not of this world – that seeks peace and wholeness rather than power and domination. We proclaim that our final allegiance doesn’t lie with our family or the state, but with God.

In my lectionary discussion group, we spent quite a bit of time bemoaning the crazy and chaotic world around us… and I heard many laments about the downfall of Christianity in America. But I am more than prepared to say that living in a post-Christian America may in fact be exactly what we need to more fully accept Christ as our Lord. Living in a post-Christian America means that we no longer are Christian by default, but that we now have the ability to choose to deeply commit our lives to this way. And it means that there are new opportunities to share this gospel with people who are disheartened by the world – to offer them a future of hope that lies now within our modern politics, but with God’s kingdom. We offer an alternative to the world as it is – not rose colored glasses – but a connection to something that is bigger that our current struggles.

I’m also thinking a lot about Matthew and Peter’s venture out onto the sea in connection with a poem by the late Eddie Askew. I can’t remember the title or which book its in, but here is the piece of the poem I have:

And, suddenly, I notice with unease, you standing with them, outside the boundary wire of my concern. Not asking that they be admitted to my world, but offering me the chance to leave my warm cocoon, thermostatically controlled by selfishness, and take my place with them, and you. At risk in real relationships, where love not law, defines what I should do.

I keep thinking about how often we tell people to come to church, rather than take church to them. I think about all of those people who will never on their own accord set foot in our large brick building. I think about the people who are in the bars in town – or working at the grocery store or the dollar general or the gas station. And I think about Jesus standing with them out in the storms of their lives.

While the storm was raging on that lake, the disciples were relatively safe in their boat. It seems they were more startled than anything else by this figure that appears and Peter doesn’t really believe it could be Jesus… what on earth is he doing out there? Why doesn’t he stay where it is safe… either get in the boat or stay on the short! He is outside the boundary of where Peter thinks he should be. And so to make sure it is really him, Peter wants proof. If it’s you Lord, command me to come to you. And Jesus says, Come.

Peter gets out there, but its scary to be in the world without all of the safety of the church (ahem, I mean boat). and so he falters and Christ picks him up and helps him back into the boat. It is new and terrifying to try to proclaim Christ out in the world, rather than just in the safety of the church, but we are called to do so. Not because Jesus tells us to (after all, Peter is the one who suggested it)… but simply because that is where Jesus is.

Who is Missing

Last week while on vacation,  I got to spend a lot of time with my neice and nephew.  My neice is three and my nephew is almost seven years old.  And whenever you spend so much time around little ones, you are guaranteed to hear the cutests and darndest things.

As we began to make our long journey back home, our car pulled out onto the highway right behind a logging truck with eight foot, freshly cut logs piled high in the back. 

We pointed out the logs to my neice, who immediately wanted to know why the trees broke.  We tried to explain that they had been cut down, but her only response was, “tell me the truth, guys!”

We went on to share how those tress would be made into things like toothpicks and tables and paper, but after every explanation, every description that seemed completely logical to our adult minds, she looked at us, with a face of pure unbelieve and shouted back, “That’s not true!  Tell me the truth, guys!”

Her little mind hasn’t yet formed the connections between a tree growing in the forest and the paper she colors on every day.  The ability for one thing to become another isn’t a concept she can comprehend yet. And so she thought we were all lying to her.  Me, her huncle, her father, all of us.  And it only got worse the more we laughed and smiled – not because we were fibbing, but because of how adorable she was.

My neice didn’t believe us because she couldn’t yet, but there are times in our lives when we have something deeply true and important to share and when no one believes us it can be very painful and frustrating.  As we explore both of our scritpures this morning, we fill find both those who don’t believe and also the longing to include them on this journey of faith.

In Paul’s letter to the Romans this is more obvious.  He writes to his fellow Israelites – those who have grown up reading the same scriptures – who understand the same prophecies – to those whom God has chosen – and Paul is in anguish over the fact that his brothers and sisters of Israel don’t believe him. No matter how many times he shares his store, they don’t believe Jesus is the Messiah they have been waiting for.  But still, Paul never gives up and keeps writing to them, trying to share what he has found.  And he keeps praying and rusting in God’s promises to Israel, to us all.

In our gospel lesson this morning, the unbelieving ones anre a bit harder to find.  When Jesus needs some time away – som rest and a space to grieve the death of his friend, John the Baptist, he tries to leave quietly in the morning.  But the crowds of followers watch his every move and they all gather together at his destination before he even arrives.

Now – having just been on vacation, I can assure you – as much as I love all of you – if you had journeyed up to Northern Wisconsin and were waiting beside my cabin when I pulled up last week – I might have been pretty upset.  I probably would have ordered you all back hom, or I might have hopped back in the car and tried to find a better hiding place.

In any case – I don’t know that I could have mustered up the compassion that Jesus had for all of those men, women and children who had journeyed out to that deserted place to be with him.

So moved was Jesus that he spent all day moving among the crowds and healing those who were sick.  He set aside his own plans for the day, his own need to grieve, and he ministered to their needs.

After hours upon hours of these acts of sacrifice, mercy, and compassion, his tired disciples come up to Jesus and begged him to send everybody home.

“There is no food here,” they cried.

“It’s hours past supper time”

“My blood sugar is running low,” they chimed in.

“My tummy is rumbling.” 

“Send everyone back to the towns so that they – and we – can get some food!”

I can just picture the mischevious, knowing smile that comes across Jesus’ face as he responds, “No need to send them away – you give them something to eat!”

Because, you see, Jesus already knows the disciples are thinking about scaricty – about how little they have -the few loaves of bread and fishes they brought with them that morning for a meager lunch they didn’t have time to eat.  And Jesus knew that what sometimes looks tiny and insignificant can be full of life and life abundant.

So in front of all of those people, all of those faithful crowds who followed Christ into the wilderness, he took the bread of his disciples, blessed the bread and broke it, then gave it to his closest followers so that they could serve the many.

All of those who gathered to see Jesus – to hear him speak and maybe ever tho be healed – got so much more than they were bargaining for that day.  They didn’t just catch a glimpse of Christ and spend some time at his feet… they caught a glimpse of the last supper.  They got a foretaste of the heavenly banquet.  They witnessed a radical outpouring of life and generosity and abundance like hadn’t been seen since the days of the prophets or since Israel journeyed in the wilderness and the people were fed by manna from heaven. 

All who were gathered there ate and were filled.  Filled with life, filled with hope, filled with the love of Christ, who shared himself with them in the breaking of the bread.

Now all of that is well and good, but like Paul Harvey – I want to know “the rest of the story.”  You see, in the “rest of the story” my mind sees unbelieers.  In the rest of the story, I feel my heart breaking like Paul’s because I think about all of those people who didn’t show up, who stayed home to mow the lawn, who didn’t think they were worthy or welcome, who were too sick to come. 

I think about all of those people today who don’t believe God is real, who can’t understand that God loves them and who live their lives empty of that reality.  I think about them and I understand Paul’s frustration.

And you know what, I re-live that feeling each month when we gather around this communion table.  I re-live that pain and longing because I know that there is enough here:

enough bread and enough juice
enough love and enough grace
for all to come and be filled.

There is more than enough here, and yet there are many who won’t taste this meal today.

Maybe they are family members who are too busy for church.  Maybe they are co-workers that you have never thought to invite.  Maybe it’s the person down the street who lives along and longs for a place to belong… but who doesn’t know we exist.

Each time we gather around the communion table, I have asked you to look around and notice who is not with us. It is not a typical part of the litany – but something that one of my pastor’s shared with me that really rocked my world.

Before that, the communion table was about my own personal relationship with God – it was a private act done in a public place.  But then, I realiced that this is a table set not just for me, or even just for those in this room, but this is a table set for all.  Everyone is welcome here.  Everyone will be fed here – if only they are able to gather around the table.

I want us to take a few minutes this morning to think about “who is missing” more seriously.  Who in your life, who in this community, is NOT gathered with us or other people of faith around the table?

Here are some slips of paper and I want to invite you to prayerfully write down the name of someone you know, someone you want to invite to join us on this journey.  I also ask you to include your name, so that together you and I can reach out to that person or family.  When we take the offering after the message, place those names in the offering plate.

My prayer is that when we gather agian around this table next month, that some of those people for whom our hearts break might be able to share in this amazing feast with us.

Over the next few weks we will explore ways to share the love we have experienced with each of these people.  Some may simply come and are eager for the invitation.  But we might find that there are others to which we have to go – to take the church to them – to gather around other tables in other places.  But let us remember that Paul never gave up on his message – and while people may not believe us or won’t come at first, God does and through his power others will too.

ABC’s of …

I spent a lot of time in the car last week – having to drive to the hospital in another city and then traveling yet again to meet with my clergy mentor. And as I did so, I kept thinking about how we can really ramp up energy for the fall and then sustain it. What would get people who haven’t been in a while to come back? What would be appealing for those in our community who have never checked out our church? How can we reach out and really start at the basics?

And then it hit me… back to school… back to the basics… what about focusing this fall, beginning with the return to our normal schedule/sunday school/3rd grade bible give out, on the ABC’s?

I struggle with the ABC’s of what… ABC’s of the church? ABC’s of faith? ABC’s of Christianity? So bear with me as I figure that one out… (or if you have suggestions – please comment!!!)

I’m also a fairly consistent lectionary preacher, so in thinking about this, I’ve been trying to figure out how each Sunday, from Aug 31 to Nov 23 (because then we start Lent), fits not only a letter, but also the weekly texts. Some have worked beautifully. Others, not so well. So I’m asking for some help.

1) Am I trying to hard to make this concept work?
2) Suggestions for the letters that have no direction yet (B, H, I, L)

Here is what I have so far:

A: Alpha/Omega or I AM

focusing on who God is, using the burning bush scriptures from Exodus, and combining this and the previous week’s gospels – Mt 16:13-28

B: Body of Christ, Blessed, ?

scriptures for the week include teaching on how to reach when someone offends you in the church, the institution of passover, and in Romans, the call to love and call to prepare for salvation by putting on Christ. Sidenote: after reading a sermon recently on Psalm 119 – I really was thinking about using “Bible” for my B… so that may be an entirely different direction

C: Care, Compassion, Community

scriptures include the law of forgiveness, the call not to judge one another, and the parting of the sea in exodus. Originally when I thought about this series, I really wanted to focus on care during this week – and to emphasize our role as a community to care for one another, and my desire to care for them. I’ve noticed that people don’t call me or tell me when something happens in their lives – like if they have to go in for surgery or suddenly end up in the hospital – which may be simply that they aren’t used to telling their pastor these things. I want to talk about how together we are supposed to care for each other.

D: Disciple (but I was really thinking about Doubt too)

scriptures: Paul’s exhortation to live lives worthy of the gospel, the parable of the landowner and the wages for workers, and if I went the doubt route – the manna and quails and the people grumbling in the wilderness

E: Emptying

I really wanted to use Kenosis for K… and then realized that the Christ Hymn fell on the E Sunday – which is perfect! (since its the same concept)

F: Faith (and maybe Fear also) ooo… maybe Fall?

This is also World Communion Sunday – so I was stuck a bit. The scriptures for the week don’t fit really well with the scope of world communion Sunday and I was stretching trying to make fruit work. Scriptures are supposed to include the parable of the wicked tenants, the 10 commandments, and the example of Paul – I press on toward the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ. I could use the wicked tenants and the 10 commandments to talk about the Fall, and our place before God – why we need the law. But another idea is to actually take the readings from August 10 and use them here: Jesus walking on the water (faith and fear) along with Paul talking about faith and the idea that there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all. (which I think works much better for World Communion Sunday). Thoughts?

G: Grace

This would be a great time to talk about grace from the Wesleyan perspective. I think the three main readings can help illustrate prevenient grace (the sinners invited to the feast), justifying grace (moses interceding after the golden calf), and sanctifying grace (stand firm, help one another, rejoice from Philippians)

H: Holy, Holy Spirit, Humility

I’m stuck here. Readings include Jesus call to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s, as well as the pharisees trying to trap Jesus in questions; Moses having the chance to encounter God’s presence, but not being able to look at God’s face; and Paul giving thanks for the Thessalonians who received the gospel with power and the Holy Spirit. Could go lots of different ways.

I: ? Instruction? Idolatry?

Again, stuck here. Readings include the greatest command – to love, the death and burial of Moses, and Paul assuring the Thessalonians that he comes to bring them not only God’s word, but also their true hearts (you are witnesses to how blameless our conduct was towards you)

J: Joy, Journey, Jordan River

All Saints Sunday – which fits in PERFECTLY. Joshua is leading the people across the river Jordan where they remember the promise of God and leave 12 stones for remembrance, Paul gives thanks for witnesses, and Matthew warns against trying to be better, but that we should all be servants – what a great day to celebrate the saints among us who have passed before us?

K: Kingdom of God/Heaven

parable of the 10 bridesmaids (the kingdom of heaven will be like this!), choose this day who you will serve (Joshua)

L: ? (Lord, Light, Love, Law, Life, Lord’s Prayer, Logos)

readings include the parable of the talents; Paul claiming that the Lord will come like a theif in the night – so we should be children of the light; and simply the introduction of Deborah as a judge – not even the full story. Part of me wants to switch this week with the greatest command to love scriptures (week I) – which would mean going a different direction with week I (could they just be flip-flopped?)

M: Messiah

Christ the King Sunday – Readings include the sheep and the goats, Christ as the head of the church, and Ezekiel’s description of the shepherd who seeks the lost.

That brings me to the first Sunday of Advent – which I want to focus on in its fullness.

Do No Harm
Do Good
Stay in Love With God

Last week, (readings here) do no harm and Paul’s struggle to keep from doing those things that he so doesn’t want to do. I’m mostly going to focus on the last part of the romans passage however… “who will deliver me fom this body of death? I thank God – through Jesus Christ our Lord”

I’m going to tie that in with the Matthew scripture. We struggle and we wrestle and on our own spend so much time focusing on all the bad things that we have done and continue to do in our life. And Wesley’s “do no harm” rule seems like this all over again. But we need to be reminded that Christ himself promised he would teach us. “take my yoke upon you and learm from Me, for I am gentle and lwly in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” so stop beating yourself up over not doing the good. walk with me, become my apprentice, cease from doing harm, and lay aside that burden of guilt.

we don’t cease to do harm because it is a law – we do it because we love Christ and want to become more like him… and we will find when we do so that his yoke is easy and his burden is light

This is week two of the series: Do Good and this week’s parable of the sower actually fits really well! (readings here)

I’m going to talk about what we have to do in our lives to become “good soil” – and that is WORK! the soil needs tilled, weeded, watered, cared for, and it doesn’t happen all on its own. While we can sit around and just wait for the holy spirit to plant seeds, if we just sit on the path and don’t take any risks, if we are surrounded by rocks (i’m going to interpret this part as those who are in families/communities where faith isn’t welcome… such as the kids who come to vbs, get all excited, and then go back to homes where their families don’t take them to church), if we let the cares of the world – weeds – crowd out God… then the seed of love will have a harder time being planted.

Wesley wanted his flock to “do good” and by that he meant an active good – caring for people’s bodies and souls and as a part of that, helping one another in the community of faith. Wesley liked to fill his time with such good deeds – not so much to earn God’s love, but because he loved God…

I am trying to tend my new garden… and it takes a lot of work – far more time that I thought it would… just think about how much work it takes to tend our souls!

Following Faithfully, aka, Getting Out of the Way

For about two years now I have had a quote hung on my office wall by Thomas Merton, a Catholic monastic and teacher. I haven’t yet put it up here in Marengo, but it reads:

In order to become myself, I must cease to be what I always thought I wanted to be.

I take this to mean that if we want to really be true to who we are, to the people and the church that God has created us to be, then we have to get out of the way.

I shared with you on one of my first Sunday’s here that I was convinced at one point in my life that I was going to be a meteorologist. I don’t know exactly where this obsession came from. In fact, as a child, I was terrified of thunderstorms. I would literally get sick to my stomach whenever the lightening started to flash and the thunder started to roll. My parents could tell you that every time we went camping it was inevitable that it would storm, and they knew enough to have me sleep by the tent door, so I could get out easily!

I eventually grew out of that, and now love to watch a storm building on the horizon. Thursday evening, as the storm rolled through, I was so intrigued by the movement of the clouds and the way they formed. The sound of the rain falling through the trees this week has been soothing. For three years, I tried to head down the path I thought I wanted to be on. I got an internship with KWWL in Waterloo and spent some time with Craig Johnson, their head meteorologist. I looked at colleges with programs in physics and atmospheric science. I thought I would be heading to graduate school and so began to major in physics, even when I started out at Simpson College. I was pressing forward with what I believed I wanted to do – and never stopped to think about what I was made to do.

But you know what, I eventually realized that while I am personally interested in weather, that it fascinates me and refreshes me, I was never meant to be a meteorologist. I wasn’t destined to sit in front of a computer and watch a cold front move across the nation or determine el nino patterns. God had something different planned for my life.

In many ways, I was doing everything possible to get in the way of what God had planned for my life. I thought I knew what I wanted, but I had no idea of what I needed or what would make me truly happy. I wasn’t paying attention to how God made me.

Our congregation was also birthed by God. We had a beginning and from the start we have had a purpose for being here. Like a child that is born into the world, our identity as a congregation will continue to change and grow. And as we look towards the future of our congregation, I think we need to keep that quote in mind as well.

In order to become myself, I must cease to be what I always thought I wanted to be.

As people who are a part of this church, I’m sure that we each have things that we want this church to be. Just listening to all of you for the last three months, I have heard some of those hopes and desires for our congregation. You want more young people in our midst. Some of you want to better support our youth and have more ways for them to be involved. Others of you want this church to be full on Sunday mornings. Some of you want to have stability and financial security in the church – instead of always operating in crisis mode. These are all good things to want!

The big question though, is if there is something out there that is even better. Something out there that we are supposed to become that perhaps none of us can see yet. Are we getting in the way of what God as planned for our church?

My thoughts take me to the parable of the good shepherd from this morning’s scripture. Jesus is speaking out in the countryside to a group of disciples and teaching them about what kind of leader he is.

Now, not many of us today are sheep herders, so it may be hard for us to really understand what is going on. So here is a little lesson – Shepherding 101, if you will.

First of all, there is a big difference between the way we lead sheep here in the West and how they would have done it in Jesus time, and continue to do in the east. We often herd our sheep – pushing them forward towards their destination, often with the aid of sheep dogs or other animals. When they begin to go the wrong direction, we push them onwards, or the dogs nip at their heels, and eventually they get where they are supposed to.

In the East however, the shepherd would have led his flock. He would have stood near the front of the flock, but was always in the midst of them. As he walked, they would walk with him. Wherever he went, they would go. As our scripture this morning reminds us, the sheep would recognize him by the sound of his voice. They knew the difference between the voice of their shepherd and that of a thief or bandit or other stranger. And when that kind, gentle voice called their names – they would follow.

Of course, there were times when the sheep must be brought home, and often at night the shepherd would bring them back in to the sheep fold to protect them.

This sheep fold would have been a fenced in area where the sheep would be safe. There would be food and water nearby, a bit of shelter, either from a nearby cave or something built. And most importantly… there was one way in and one way out.

In our scripture this morning, Jesus tells us about the gate… and the gatekeeper… and in many ways claims to be both. The gate, or entrance to this sheepfold would have been an opening that was wide enough for a few sheep to enter at a time. But the gate also had to be narrow enough for a person to lay across it. You see, instead of having a gate that swings open, like we might think of today, the gate for the sheepfold would have been an actual person! At night, the shepherd would lay across the entrance, so that anyone coming in or going out would have to cross his very body. He was a human shield against other animals getting in and the sheep getting out.

I think as we begin to apply this scripture to our lives today, we can think of the church – this actual building – as being our sheepfold. It is our place of safety and comfort. It is the place that we return to every week to be refreshed and reminded of who we are and whose we are. As a former pastor of mine said: “Sunday morning worship is like a drink of cold, fresh water, that gives you just enough energy to get back out there and do it again.”

We, like the sheep, are meant to spend most of our time out in the pasture. We are supposed to be out in the world, enjoying the good things that God has to offer and also faithfully following our shepherd. But there are times when we return to this place, to renew our spirits, and gain the energy to go back out there and do it all again.

Now, I have often had trouble with this bit of scripture, because I have never been much of a follower. I have always been a leader by nature, and that’s one of the reasons that I’m standing up here in front of you! But I think, deep down in my heart, I also resent being called a sheep. Sheep are smelly animals. And we often think of them as very dumb and easily led. Why on earth would we want to be a sheep? Why would we want to be a part of the herd and follow that “herd mentality.” Surely the American culture teaches us that we should think for ourselves and forge our own paths! Surely what we want matters!

But then I remember that quote by Thomas Merton again:

In order to become myself, I must cease to be what I always thought I wanted to be.

As I read more about sheep this week – I learned that they actually are smarter than one might think! Did you know that there have actually been studies done recently about the intelligence of these animals? It turns out that sheep have excellent long-term memories. The test group of animals was shown a set of pictures of other sheep’s faces. For some of those faces, they were given treats. Time and time again, when they were presented with a choices between the face that would give a positive response and the one that gave them nothing – the sheep continued to choose the face they recognized.

This week, I realized that “sheep are not dumb, only willing to be led.” They understand that they are a part of a group, a community, and they deeply trust their shepherd. Rather than blindly following anyone, they carefully discern who they can trust, who will seek the best for them, and once they recognize that person – they will follow him anywhere.

Christ claims to be our shepherd. The question before us is… will we choose to follow him faithfully and listen for the sound of his voice… for the new vision for our church, or are we going to try to get in the way and seek our own pastures?

We are all gathered here this morning because we know that this is a place where we are safe and loved. It is the sheep fold that protects us. We know that we are a part of the flock. The question is, are we willing to have anyone join our fold? What new sheep would Christ like to add to our flock? And are we going to help them get through the gate?

You see, I truly believe, that even as we sit here this morning, the Spirit of God is working on the hearts and minds of people all across this town. I believe that Christ, our faithful shepherd, isn’t going to just sit at the entrance of our church, guarding the door, waiting for us to come in and out. I believe that Christ is out there… actively searching for those lost sheep.

Jesus tells his disciples another parable in Luke 15:

Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

I don’t have the answers to those questions yet. Together we will be listening for God’s voice and direction and together we will discern who we are meant to become.

And from my own experience I can promise you, if we take the time to listen, God will lead us. God will provide.

Christ is Risen! Easter Sunday is Over! Praise the Lord!

Well. Somehow I made it through one of the busiest weeks of my entire life. The irony didn’t escape me that while many friends and siblings and loved ones were on spring break, I felt like i was in the midst of finals.

This past week, I had a funeral, gave the invocation at a banquet, had the neice and nephew over for a sleep over, did Maundy Thursday service, Good Friday service, visited three diferent sets of relatives and had 2 worship services on Sunday morning. *whew!*

Now I’m exhausted. But instead of taking the day off monday and sleeping, I ended up taking my car to the shop. And then found out the repairs would be almost as much as the car itself, that the parts had to be ordered and that I shouldn’t even drive the vehicle until the repairs were finished. So, we dropped the car off at my in-laws, rented a vehicle and then got ready to drive to Des Moines for our School for Ministry.

I’m in the midst of it right now. I thought about blogging my way through, but for right now I’m just going to update as we go. Our faculty is Roberta Bondi, Tex Sample and Lovett Weems. So far- it has been EXCELLENT. Bondi is teaching us about prayer, especially through the desert mothers and fathers. Sample is lecturing about justice – especially corporate domination of government, the inequality of wealth and the increasing economic risk that families face. and Weems tomorrow will begin to talk about church leadership. I am just floored by what we have discussed so far and am SO glad that I am here.

roundtable preaching

This past semester I got to work on my senior project with Dr. John McClure, a professor of homiletics at Vanderbilt Divinity. My project has been on the intersection of so-called postmodern church practices with rural churches in Iowa and one of his suggestions, as a homiletician, was that I incorporate some kind of collaborative preaching model.

And to be honest, with my leadership style and my own values, I desperately want to do so. I truly believe that the Holy Spirit brings us to and reveals to us the Word of God as we read scriptures and as we pray about what to preach. And I also believe that I am not the only person the Holy Spirit speaks to in my church! There is a word to be proclaimed and who knows who might have the message from God this week. I think there is also something that we each bring to the text, experiences that we have that need to be shared with others. And that whenever two or more are gathered, Christ is present.

So I made the invitation to people in the church to join me on Monday afternoons for a “roundtable” discussion about the text for the week. And unfortunately the weather both weeks so far has been awful – snowy, icy, foggy. And as I might have expected this early in my ministry at this church, the participants are all the same faithful people who show up for each and every other church group. The good thing about this group is that it is designed to change completely every few months, so in May I will be asking those individuals to stop coming and to help me recruit others.

One of my greatest temptations in this group is to talk too much. I really want to hear what their perspectives and their questions in relation to the text are. I spend monday afternoons doing some serious research so that I can at least begin to address whatever might come up. So far, there have been good outcomes! Last week we were looking at Jesus in the wilderness and the temptation, but because the lectionary places that text alongside Adam and Eve in the garden we got to talking about how as humans we can resist temptation… and that got us thinking about holding each other accountable. I don’t know that I ever would have gone the direction of accountability with the sermon had it not been for the group, but they are aware that as a church we need to be more actively supporting one another. It turned into a great message!

I’m still learning how to incorporate their ideas into the sermon in more compelling ways, however. I realized halfway through the sermon that I said “in our roundtable group this week we discussed..” or some variation of that too many times. I need to refresh myself on the last chapter in McClure’s book “The Roundtable Pulpit”
