All By Myself
For part of renewal leave, I needed to get away and get out of the familiar. I’ve been away from emails and calls and meetings long enough that I’ve been able to disconnect in that way and this was one more way to shift the routine. So I planned a little retreat and hiking trip to Western South Dakota.
I didn’t necessarily intend to come alone, but things worked out that way. When I’ve been on work trips before and have some extra time, I’m used to going to a museum or checking out something locally by myself. And even when my spouse and I travel together, I often want to see more things and he needs introvert time and we’ve developed a pattern where I explore in the morning and meet back up with him for lunch for the rest of the day.

I’ve been a bit nervous about being on my own this time… but I’ve also been so proud of myself for not being afraid. On the trail this morning, I strategically started at the same time as an older couple… Without being too obvious. I took along my book to restaurants. I gave myself plenty of time and made pit stops whenever I needed. I’ve (mostly) stayed off social media… But I have been checking in frequently back home with my spouse.
On the one hand it is weird to be on my own for this trip. Everywhere I look are couples or families or groups of friends. I’ve taken lots of photos for others! But it has also felt empowering to go at my own pace, listen to my body and my gut, and not miss this opportunity. Maybe we should all try it more often!
